Clifton power line ride
Begin on West Passaic Ave where the power lines cross the road. I parked on High Street, which ends at West Passaic. High Street is just northeast of waypoint 044 on the map.
If you park on High Street, ride north to West Passaic and turn left. Turn right almost right away onto the grass and ride under the power line. There's no trail, just a wide expanse of mowed grass. Occasionally you'll cross a road, so remember to look both ways! After a little over a half a mile you'll reach Route 3. Watch the cars. It's fun! Then go back just a bit and head east towards the park. Assuming you're headed south, it's the first left, and you'll see a small playground through the trees. Go straight, pass the playground, and ride parallel to route 3. The road is very rough - perfect for a mountain bike! You'll ride for just under half a mile. When you come out of the woods, there's a VERY steep 15' drop and then you're at Bloomfield Avenue. Turn left (I'd recommend staying on the sidewalk on your side of the street - don't cross). Take the next left and follow the road uphill. Basically this route will parallel route 3, so don't take any right turns (see the map). Eventually the road will end with only a right turn available. But if you look carefully, you'll see a paved sidewalk leading into a park. Follow that. At the end of the park, keep going straight. Shortly thereafter, you'll be back with your old friend, the powerline! If you get as close to route 3 as possible, you should be able to see your last route 3 vantage point across the road. Go north along the powerline. You'll reach Allwood road after about a quarter mile. Cross Allwood (be careful!) and keep going on the grass under the powerline. Note after Allwood the powerline goes northeast instead of north. Go for a bit less than a half a mile, and you'll reach a power line intersection. Here you've got a choice. You can continue going northeast for about a half mile. You'll reach a power substation, at which point you'd have to turn around. Or you could make a left turn and head northwest. This is a bit more interesting as you get to ride between tiny farm plots after you cross Clifton ave. This leg ends when you reach the parkway. And that's the end! From here, just turn around and go home.
